What are the boundaries of the Waianae Watershed?

The Waianae Watershed consists of a 58.5 square-mile area west of the Waianae Range from Nanakuli to Kaena Point. There are nine ahupuaa within this watershed: Nanakuli, Lualualei, Waianae, Makaha, Keaau, Ohikilolo, Makua, Kahanahaiki, and Keawaula.

Where does Waianae's water come from?

Waianae receives 20 to 75 inches of rainfall per year; only the summit area of Mt. Kaala receives the highest amount. Movement of one drop of rainwater from the top of the Waianae Range to the aquifer below could take 25 years.

Underground aquifers - a limited resource
Streams - a very small percentage
Pearl Harbor aquifer - 4.5 million gallons per day pumped to Waianae
